The government body in charge of planning and executing the census is the National Population Commission (NPC). The NPC is entrusted with creating the necessary facilities and staff to carry out a precise and reliable census.

Eligibility of national population census

For instance, in Nigeria, the National Population Commission (NPC), which is in charge of carrying out the census, decides who is eligible to participate in it. 

Regardless of citizenship, the NPC normally considers everyone who had resided in Nigeria for at least six months prior to the census day to be a resident.

When will the National population census start

The National Population and Housing Census for this year will start on May 3, according to a statement from the Federal Government of Nigeria.

This was confirmed in Abuja on Sunday by Dr. Garba Abari, the spokesperson of the  National Population and Housing Census publicity and advocacy committee, who was a guest on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Forum.

The three-day activity, which will get underway on the third of May and end on the fifth of May, is expected to take effect across Nigeria’s 36 States, including the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria. (FCT).

National Population Commission Salary Breakdown

The pay schedule for the ad hoc workers who will help with the 2023 Population and Housing Census has been established by the National Population Commission (NPC).

There are two types of compensation: primary salary and allowances.

The director of the Census Department, Mrs. Evelyn Arinola Olanipekun, has stated that the NPC ad hoc staff will be paid three distinct types of allowances: 

Feeding Allowance (National Population Census portal)

Specialized Workforce (SWF): N2,000 each day for 13 days. (three days of SWF and 10 days of state training). 

Transport Allowance

To help with transportation expenses, each recipient will be provided with N20,000. N15,000 per day for 13 days (for SWF) and 10 (for the state facilitator) is the trainer’s training compensation. (b) 10 and 13 trainees (SWF and state facilitator) will get N10,000 daily, respectively

The commission has decided that payments will be split in half for each category: N46,000 (SWF), and N40,000 for feeding and transportation. (state facilitators).

Training allowance

State trainers (facilitators) will receive N150,000, trainees (trainees) will receive N130,000, and trainers (SWF) gets N195,000.

It further said that the aforementioned allowances would also be given to other groups, such as enumerators and supervisors, albeit with fewer training days and a smaller payment. 

Specialist employees, facilitators, enumerators, supervisors, and other census staff receive total salaries that normally fall between N50,000 and N100,000.

According to NPC, the principal compensation for NPC ad hoc employees would be paid following the census exercise. The average basic or main salary of a single census functionary varies between N50,000 to N250,000 depending on their position.
