Dibu Ojerinde Life and Education

He was born in Nigeria’s Igboho, Oyo State. In 1964, he graduated from Wesley College in Ibadan with a Teacher Grade II Certificate Examinations (TC II). After enrolling in Adeyemi College of Education, he graduated in 1968 with the Nigeria Certificate in Education (N.C. E)

He continued on to the esteemed Obafemi Awolowo University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education (B.Sc.) in 1973 and a Master of Education (M. Ed.) in 1975.

Later, he continued on to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he graduated in 1978 with a Ph. D. in Educational Measurement. In October 1986, he was appointed Professor of Tests and Measurement.

In 1965, he started working as a secondary school instructor at Laogun Methodist Grammar School.

He is the first Test and Measurement Professor in Nigeria. He was hired in 1990 as the National Primary Education Commission’s (NPEC) Director of Monitoring and Evaluation, a position he held until 1991.

He was named Director and Consultant at the Federal Ministry of Education‘s Centre for Educational Measurement (CEM) in 1991.

He was chosen to serve as the Registrar of the National Board for Educational Measurement (NBEM) after his term ended in 1992.

Also, he worked here for seven years (1992 – 1999). He was named the Registrar of the National Examination Council, or NECO, not long after he finished his term at the National Board for Educational Measurement (NBEM) in 1999.

He worked here for eight years (1999 – 2007). After his term ended in 2007, he was appointed to the position of Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, or JAMB. He held this job for five years (2007–2012), then on April 10, 2012, he was again appointed to it.

Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, a former registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has once again been detained by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) on suspicion of an N5 billion scam.

Soon after today’s hearing before Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court, FHC, in Abuja, where Ojerinde has been on trial for 18 counts including the misappropriation of N5 billion in public monies, ICPC agents made the arrest.

Justice Egwuatu postponed the trial until February 15, 2023, but while Ojerinde was being escorted out of the court by one of his sons to the parking lot, operatives from the anti-corruption commission approached and took him away in their car.

What led up to Ojerinde’s trial?

You may recall that the anti-graft agency charged the JAMB boss in July 2021 with the charges he is currently disputing in court.

The accusations made against him allegedly occurred while he served as the registrar of both JAMB and the National Examinations Council (NECO). Ojerinde entered a not-guilty plea during his arraignment and refuted all charges.

Later, he had to post N200 million in bail terms.

Dibu Ojerinde May Face Fresh Charges

On Thursday, the ICPC announced that its agents had discovered two accounts that had been created in the names of Trillium Learning Centre Ltd and Sapati International Schools Ltd including in which money had been routed off using fraudulent student profiles.

The former JAMB Registrar had been invited by the commission for an interview over new evidence on December 12th, 2022, but he wrote through his counsel seeking 14 days, according to ICPC.

But after the 14-day window of grace closed on December 27, 2022, Ojerinde declined to accept the invitation as promised by his lawyer.

“As part of its ongoing investigation, the Commission has unearthed new information that seems to show that Ojerinde is the lone signatory to a number of bank accounts that are held under the names Trillium Learning Centre Ltd and Sapati International School Ltd.

According to reports, Ojerinde ran such accounts under the guises of Joshua Olakulehin Olaniran and Akanbi Lamidi, respectively, utilizing fictitious identities and forgeries.

According to reports, he allegedly ran a different account under the name Standout Institutes Ltd. using a different bogus identity, Adeniyi Banji.

The checkbooks for the companies‘ accounts, according to the ICPC, were located in Ojerinde.

“Moreover, if the new information is validated, the agency continued, the Commission may likely prosecute the former registrar before a court of competent jurisdiction for offenses bordering on forgery of papers.

Additionally, the Commission may also look into charges of stolen identity, money laundering, and concealment of gratification. Besides, these charges, the Commission may also consider other related offenses.
