Early Life and Educational Background of Stella Effah Attoe
Professor Stella Effah Attoe was born on November 29, 1959, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. She attended three different primary schools. The first school she attended was Saint Louise Nursery School, Bompai, Kano State.
Secondly, she attended Our Lady Girls’ School in Tiko, Cameroon, and lastly, Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School in Lagos State. In 1971, she completed her primary school education and bagged her first school leaving certificate with distinction from her last primary school.
In 1972, she extended her education to the secondary school level at Edgerley Memorial Girls’ Secondary School, Calabar. In 1976, she completed her senior secondary education and earned division 1 in her West African School Certificate Examination.
Due to her unending desire to know more, she started her tertiary education at the University of Calabar in the history department. In she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts, Second Class Honors, Upper Division. She also enrolled in postgraduate studies at the University of Calabar in 1981. In 1985 she completed her postgraduate studies and earned a doctorate in African History at the age of 26.

Career and Achievement of Prof. Stella Effah Attoe
Professor Stella Effah Attoe’s career journal started as a lecturer at the Cross River College of Education (then Cross River State School of Basic Studies) at Akampa in 1981.
Four years later (in February 1986) she left the job to seize an appointment in the History Department of the University of Calabar as a Lecturer II. In this discipline, she taught for 35 years. Prof. Stella Effah Attoe’s ranking increases periodically. She became a Professor in 2010.
Prof. Stella Effah Attoe lectured almost all the courses offered at the University of Calabar and taught many generations of students as a Lecturer. The majority of these students are renowned scholars and some are now professionals in their respective disciplines.
In her lifetime as a Lecturer (Academics), she had a massive impact on the educational sector. This is because she not only lectured but Supervised over a hundred Undergraduate Long Essays, 15 PhD dissertations, and 25 M.A. theses.
In addition to that, she has also worked as an external Examiner to other Universities such as the University of Uyo and the University of Benue respectively. In other departments at the University of Calabar, She worked as a Representative in the defense of Masters and Ph.D. respectively.

Prof. Stella Effah Attoe Devotion to Youth Empowerment
Prof. Stella Effah Attoe became a member of several committees due to her contribution to the well-being of humanity specifically children, youths, and women. She also took part in the following activities:
- Employment of women and youth through grants to start up business
- Mobilization of women to enhance their utilization of their voting right
- Granting of scholarship to girl-child for educational aid in Biase
- Provision of counselling and mentorship for youth and women
- Provision mentorship, guidance, and counselling to postgraduate and undergraduate students at the University of Calabar.
- She has a vital role in the NGO – Center for Gender Empowerment and mobilization of women in Cross River State
Legacy of Stella Effah Attoe
Effah Attoe’s influence was not only limited to the educational sector, she was honoured for her commitment to the service of the masses. She contributed significantly to the growth and development of Nigeria.
She was only the PDP Woman leader, this is served the nation in the educational sector due to her intellectual capacity for national service and leadership. Effah Attoe served the nation as a Commissioner for Education before being a Commissioner for Information and Culture in Cross River State. She died on 29, October 2023, after a brief illness. Her legacy will forever be remembered for the significant support she gave to children, youth, women, undergraduate and post-graduate students, and the whole of Nigeria at large.
