How Jeff Bezos Overtook Bill Gates to Become the Richest Man in the World
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos became the world’s richest man on Thursday morning July 27, when the shares of Amazon.com rose by 1 percent, this was enough to make Top Mirco-soft boss Bill Gates, according to a real-time list of billionaires by Forbes.com which has ranked the world’s richest men over the years. Forbes estimated the wealth of Bezos, who is Amazon’s chief executive, at about $90.6 billion, compared with $90 billion for Gates.
Bezos has added tens of billions of dollars in wealth and Amazon shares surged more than 40 percent during that time period. They traded at about $1,063 on Thursday, ahead of the release of the company’s latest earnings report.
Amazon chief executive Bezos holds almost 81 million shares of Amazon, almost 17 percent of the company. Bezos founded Amazon.com in 1994 after making a cross-country drive from New York to Seattle, writing up the Amazon business plan on the way. He initially set up the company in his garage.
In 1998 Bezos invested $250,000 in Google, making him one of the first shareholders. His $250,000 investment has risen to about 3.3 million shares of Google stock which is said to be worth about $3.1 billion today.
He has investement in Unity Biotechnology which is a life-extension research, this firm is a research that hopes to slow or stop the process of aging.
