Following the resignation of the former service chiefs, the president of the federal republic of Nigeria (Mr.) Muhammadu Buhari appointed new service chiefs.
Among these service chiefs was Awwal Zubairu Gambo. He is now the current Chief of Defence Staff.
He got his appointment on Tuesday the 26th of January 2021. The position of the Chief of Naval Staff is always occupied by a four-star Chief. Mr Awwal Zubairu Gambo who is one of the four-star chiefs is now in that position.

Reasons for the Appointment of New Service Chiefs
The service chiefs passed the retirement age kept for the public service commission. Since the president was not ready to change them, they took to resign by themselves.
The lapses that the Nigerian security has suffered in the hands of Boko Haram are being blamed on Buhari’s consistency of not changing the service chiefs and bringing in able hands.
The putting an end to the Boko Haram terrorists was promised by the retired Service chiefs. Unfortunately, they could not complete that line of action.
On the 27th of January, 2021, the president’s spokesperson signed the statement that showed the resignation of this service. This statement also saw Awwal Zubairu Gambo to the present position he is at.
New service chiefs for the army, defence and air force also got their appointment alongside with him.
Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo is the 23rd person to get the appointment to this position.
He was appointed by the president himself in the person of, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari on the 26th of January, 2021

The new appointed Service Chiefs received a warm congratulation by the president in their new appointment.
He said that the service chiefs are in to make a change in his administration as he is also working towards it.
The president also promised to do all in his power to make sure that the effort of the service chiefs comes to the view of all citizens of the great country of Nigeria.
He went further to remind them on the stage the military was in when he was first elected as the president in 2015 and the stage their predecessors have left them in.
The president reminded them of their promise to secure the country, revive the nation’s economy and most importantly fight corruption.
Since Buhari came into power, his mission has been to eliminate corruption and he is ready to continue with this programme together with his newly appointed service chiefs.
The Mr president also charged them to look into the activities of the officers in their control. He told them to make them look good enough and also as professionals that they are.
They are also to make sure the officers under them be of good conducts not only to their superiors but also to other citizens of the country.
The president finally made a promise to make sure all their needs to make an impact in their different duty post will be given to them as long as it is for the good of our great nation, Nigeria.

About Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo
Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo saw his way into the Nigerian Navy on the 24th of September 1984.
At this time, he was a member of Regular Course 36. Four years later, he got his recruitment into the navy, he also got his commission as a sub-lieutenant.
Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo is an underwater warfare specialist. He also has a sub-specialisation in intelligence.
He was formerly the director of procurement at the Defence Space Administration before his appointment as the Chief of Naval Staff.
The Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo obtained a PhD degree in Transport Management from the University of Ladoke. He also has a Master’s Degree in Transport Management from the University of Akintola
He is one of the high ranking members of the Nigerian Institute of Management, Certified Institute of Shipping, Institute of Corporate Administration of Nigeria and also the National Defence College of South Africa.
Awwal Zubairu attended both Junior Division 48/99 and Senior course 26 at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji.
He also went through other courses of which includes the National Defence College at the South African National Defence College.
As earlier stated, he was serving as the Director of Procurement at the Defence Space Agency before his present appointment.
Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo has several awards among which includes the Grand Service Star, Distinguished Service Star and the Passed Staff Course.
The Rear Admiral has a happy marriage as he is married to Mrs Hajiya Nana Aishat Gambo. He has three lovely children.

Chief of Naval Staff Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo was born on the 22nd 0f April 1996. His background is one from Nasarawa local government in Kano State.
He got his recruitment into the Nigerian Navy on the 24th of September 1984. At this time, he was a member of regular Course 36. As earlier stated, on the 24th of September 1988, he was commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant.
